The presence of the Sacred Heart Sisters in Karnataka was firmly established with the founding of a convent at Iduvally, Shimoga district, on 26 October 1979. Sr. Digna Maria S.H., Sr. Rose Pulikkeel S.H., and Sr. Rose John S.H. were the first three members of the Iduvally convent, with Rev. Sr. Mary Augustine S.H. serving as its first superior.
In 1980, the second convent in Karnataka was founded at Udane. Over time, additional convents were established in various parts of the Dakshina Kannada district.
On 4 August 2004, Mary Matha Region, Belthangady, was formed, with Sr. Mary Boniface S.H. appointed as its first regional superior.
In 2009, we legally registered the Mary Matha Region as Mary Matha Province of the Sacred Heart Congregation under the Indian Trust Act. We are a religious trust, working primarily in the Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Udupi districts of Karnataka state.
Our mission is to help Catholic women pursue spirituality through a life dedicated to God and humanity, while fostering religious formation, pastoral ministry, education, and service to society. Guided by faith, we remain committed to nurturing vocations and strengthening the spiritual life of the communities we serve.
